Extraordinary uncovering of the floor of the Siena Cathedral.
On the occasion of the Year of Saint Francis, proclaimed by His Holiness Pope Leo XIV to commemorate the eighth centenary of the passing of Saint Francis of Assisi (October 3, 1226), the Archdiocese of Siena – Colle Val d’Elsa – Montalcino and the Opera of the Siena Cathedral announce from June 27 to July 31 and from August 18 to November 15 the extraordinary uncovering of the Cathedral floor, one of the largest and most precious figurative cycles in the history of Italian art.
The title chosen for this year, "The Supreme Good," recalls the words of the famous prayer that Saint Francis composed after receiving the Stigmata on Mount La Verna: "You are good, all good, the supreme good, Lord God living and true. You are wisdom." An invocation that recognizes in God the source of all wisdom and absolute truth — the same ideal that inspires the iconographic program of the Sienese pavement, a symbolic journey of humanity towards divine knowledge.
