From April 6 to October 31, one of the most enchanting events of the Siena Cathedral returns: the visit with the clavigero, the exclusive experience that allows you to enter the Cathedral at the first light of morning, when silence still envelops the Temple and art reveals itself in all its authenticity.
Every morning visitors will have the unique opportunity to follow the clavigero – the custodian of the keys – in the daily ritual of opening the Cathedral, witnessing the lighting of the lamps and the preparation of the sacred spaces before the arrival of the public.
The big novelty this year is the presence, alongside the clavigero, of a specialized guide who will accompany visitors in discovering the artworks and curiosities kept by the Cathedral, further enriching the evocative journey. An unusual tour that combines the thrill of the Cathedral's awakening with a conscious approach to understanding its masterpieces, in an intimate and timeless atmosphere.
In the silence of the morning, it will be possible to admire the magnificence of the Cathedral, visit the Piccolomini Library, and experience the thrill of the elevated route of the rooftops with the opening of the Gate of Heaven, accompanied by the story of centuries of history, art, and spirituality. In the summer period, from the end of June to mid-October, during the extraordinary uncovering, the experience will be enriched by the possibility of also admiring the famous Cathedral Floor, the magnificent "marble carpet" that encompasses over five hundred years of artistic and symbolic history of the city. The clavigero: the awakening of the Siena Cathedral is one of the special cultural experiences promoted by the Opera della Metropolitana and organized by Opera Laboratori, designed for a small number of people (maximum 18 participants per group), to ensure an authentic and engaging encounter with one of the absolute masterpieces of Italian artistic heritage. By popular demand in 2026, the appointments multiply with no less than 63 visiting days divided into two turns, simultaneously, every morning.
