Reviews for SANTA CATERINA HOTEL IN SIENA

At the Santa Caterina Hotel in Siena we are very interested in the opinions of our guests. We want to learn how we can improve our services from them and, at the same time, it's always nice when our guests are satisfied with their stay at our hotel in the centre of Siena.

Fantastic hotel, especially cyclists. (I rode the Strade Bianche Grand Fondo from it)

  TripAdvisor
The hotel is well placed for S.B. sportive and also for the main pro race. Management are very cyclist friendly, with about 16 guests doing the sportive. The hotel have an outside 'cantina' or room with track pump and plenty of space to look after bikes instead of keeping them in our rooms. During the day the hotel was very amenable to make us a coffee whenever we came back from a reccy ride and could not have been more helpful in giving us information about Siena and where to eat or do things. The 2017 Grand Fondo was a wet and muddy year, and my shower was used to wash out my filthy kit; again with no issues from management. There is also a hose pipe in the small garden to wash the bikes down. If (when!) I do the sportive again I will definitely return to Hotel Santa Caterina.

“Lovely hotel with a great location”

  Tripadvisor.com
This beautiful little hotel is located just outside the Siena city gates and has it own parking area, which makes it perfect for drivers coming to enjoy Siena. Il Campo is just a few minutes atmosphere walk from the hotel, which has a beautiful garden area and a great view of the Tuscany countryside. The staff were welcoming and helpful, and the breakfast, served in a garden-view breakfast room, was fantastic. We ate in a restaurant recommended by the man at the front desk, and it was great. This hotel is highly recommended.

Quaint hotel

This albergo is a treasure not to be missed! Professional and efficient staff, clean room and public areas, great breakfast buffet. Main piazza is about a one mile walk away, through the Porta Romana. Incredible views from the garden area. Pleasant experience overall. We'll definitely stay again.

Get room 21 for an awesome view

  TripAdvisor
We really enjoyed our stay at this place. We stayed for 3 nights in August. Staff were all very friendly, great language skills, and the breakfast was good (esp. the pastries). Typical european continental buffet breakfast, but atypical garden: great view of the countryside which is nice after a long day of walking Siena streets. The room was fine. Our room (21, end of the hall) was quiet and had an excellent view. You will walk an extra 5-10 minutes each way to get into the old city past the Roman Wall.

Dear Lorenza, Janet and I would like to thank you

Dear Lorenza, We are now back in the USA after a wonderful week and a half in Tuscany. Janet and I would like to thank you for welcoming us to the Santa Caterina. We stayed at some lovely places on our trip, but of all of them the Santa Caterina is our favorite. The view out over the countryside from our room, and the wonderful garden for breakfast in the morning or an aperitif in the afternoon, were truly memorable. Many thanks and best wishes, Frank & Janet Middlebury, VT

Very Convenient, Slightly Quirky, and Very Friendly

  TripAdvisor
A friend and I have just returned from spending 11 nights in the Hotel Santa Caterina in Siena and, on reflection, we don't think that we could have found a better place to stay in the entire city. The location, just a short distance outside the Porta Romana and right on the SR2, is very convenient and the walk into the city centre is surprisingly short (about 10 minutes). The hotel itself has CHARACTER! The main building is about 300 years old and, although the annex where we stayed might be a bit younger, it certainly isn't new. The staff go out of their way to be helpful (they extricated my SUV from the rather small parking lot every morning without complaint and were very good about recommending and arranging restaurant bookings). Yes, the electrical system does have its occasional fits as does the WiFi connection, while the furniture might be described as eclectic but the breakfasts are good (you can have those and drinks from the bar on the terrace which has a panoramic view of southeast Tuscany (so did our suite in the annex but that's another story). I LIKED it!

So pretty!

  TripAdvisor
Beautiful stay. The courtyard overlooks Siena and it breathtaking. Morning breakfast in very extensive offering a variety of choices good for vegetarians, and non. Family owned. Service is always attentive. Rooms have A/C; somewhat small for two people but definitely worth the stay. A plus: hotel is right in front of the bus stop (super cute and tiny) that takes you straight into town.

Hope I'll come back!

  TripAdvisor
Any doubt that it's the best hotel in Siena. It really looks like a tuscany sweet dream, with a lovely breakfast and romantic yet simple bedrooms. From here we traveled each day to a different city: montalcino, san giminiano, Lucca, Pisa and even Assis. The location is perfect: in front of one of Siena main gates. There's a parking area in the hotel. For the ones who travel Tuscany by Car, an advice: AVOID as much as you can entering italian walled medieval towns with your rented Car, eventhough you have GPS. Leave your Car outside, go walking, take a taxi.... During one year AFTER our trip, we were still receiving traffic fines! We didn't do any clear traffic violation...

A Tuscan Jewel

We stayed at the Santa Caterina in early September and loved it. The staff was very helpful, giving accurate directions to help us find our way around Tuscany by car. As a side note, if you rent a car, get the smallest one that you can get your luggage in as the parking is really tight. The breakfast was very nice and the garden setting to eat it in was the most incredible of our trip. The walk to Il Campo is a bit of a hike but the beauty of the city makes it a pleasant walk. Our room overlooking the garden was spacious, very clean, and very quiet. We would highly recommend this hotel if you do not mind the walk to Il Campo. Plano, Texas

Charming hotel and a great staff

  TripAdvisor
Hotel Santa Caterina was a gem. The room and bed were comfortable, and the garden with beautiful view and the pretty dining room were perfect to have a tasty breakfast with lots of variety. The best part of our stay was having a staff who were extremely helpful in every way, Lucio, in particular. They offered assistance with transportation, restaurants, and sights to see. We would definitely stay there again!

A terrific three-star find

  TripAdvisor
We had a two-level suite for a very reasonable price in a beautifully decorated hotel with excellent service, including a fine breakfast and secured parking. We were not planning to stay in Siena, but it was late so we booked on the internet. We couid not have been more pleased. Suggestion: Ask for a room away from the street, although that's where we were, and noise was not a problem.

Second stop of our Honeymoon

  Hotels.com
This is a magical hotel - and I've stayed in hotels all over the world. The second stop of our Honeymoon and it simply could not have been any better. The hotel has bags of character, the rooms are wonderful and clean and well appointed, the terrace is a thing to behold and you may never leave to see the other sights (!) and the staff were excellent in every respect: friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and very efficient. Caution though: it is 3/4 of a mile walk (up hill) from the hotel to The Campo and you do need a taxi from the station - unless you are super fit! The parking is great - if a squeeze to get into the car park - and the hotel is very well located for day drives out into Tuscany. Would we go back? ABSOLUTELY!

A lovely Quaint Hotel and Friendly Staff

  TripAdvisor
A very European still hotel with rustic furnishings and beautiful view of the Tuscan countryside. Request a garden view for a quiet stay and scenery, especially room 19 which is a larger size than their standard room and the only one with a balcony. We were greeted by Lucio who was extremely polite and friendly. He help with our bags, cocktails and wine, and recommended for great restaurants. Breakfast is a typical European style and very adequate. We stayed for 4 nights and had a wonderful time. The hotel is a block from the South gate and an easy walk to the square of 10 to 15 minutes. Remember Siena is on a hill so expect to navigate a few hills. There's a bus stop in front of the hotel that wiil take you close to the center square for 1.25 Euros if needed.

The rooms are slightly humid but it's close to the centre of town

  TripAdvisor
The view on the main terrace is excellent for breakfast or at any time. It's far in to town where there are many bars and eateries to choose from. There was some traffic noise but not everybody noticed :-)

Helpful, professional staff; convenient location

  Hotels.com
I stayed four days here and found it a great value for service. I was initially concerned about this hotel's distance from central, but it's a very short walk and an enjoyable one (slight uphill, which like much of Siena could be a challenge for some). My room was cozy, very clean, with great views of the countryside and small working desk area. Functional wardrobe for clothes, very quiet, small typical Italian-style shower. Hotel patio was wonderful but a bit chilly in winter to use. Breakfast included cereals, fruit, juices, sliced meats and cheeses, and sweet and savory bread. The hotel lacks a "lobby" per se; it has a salon with a bar, some chairs, and unused TV that leads to the breakfast area. Front desk staff were very helpful, professional, friendly and efficient, and helped me to orient to the city, book outings to the countryside, and highlight cultural events in the city. I would stay here again for my next trip to Siena

A Tuscan experienxe

This review is somewhat overdue. We stayed at Hotel Santa Caterina for three nights as part of a five week trip through Europe. Siena and Santa Caterina was one of the highlights. Lucio welcomed us and provided wonderful service throughout our stay, much appreciated. The view from our room over the hills and valleys, breakfast in the garden, the quite short walk into the Piazza del Campo for dinner each night, these are all great memories. There will definitely be a return visit to stay at Santa Caterina.

“Good service and convenient”

  Tripadvisor.com
This hotel is almost directly outside the city gates. This is a perfect location, because you can't drive through the gates without a permit and it's a short walk to the main piazza. When we arrived Lucio was so gracious and helpful. He provided great advice of things to see and was even kind enough to come and parallel park our car, when he seen we were having trouble. Additionally he opened the restaurant, so we could purchase water (2.50 Euro/liter), very reasonable. The room was clean. The bed was in a loft and the bathroom was down the stairs. Make sure you leave a small light on for night time visits to the toilet. The garden outside the back of the hotel has a great view of the Tuscan valley and is a great place to unwind after a busy day. This is the best hotel to stay for a visit to Siena.

Wonderful view, helpful staff

Enjoyed our stay! View from terrace was beautiful. Staff was very helpful -- they suggested two restaurants that were the best meals we had in Italy.

Wish I could live here

  TripAdvisor
I am so glad we chose to stay at Hotel Santa Caterina during our time in and around Siena. Its location allows you experience both the Tuscan countryside AND the charm of the town of Siena (Piazza del Campo is a leisurely 10-minute walk away). The garden is incredibly peaceful and beautiful, and the view of the countryside looks like a painting- you have to keep reminding yourself it is real and you are actually seeing it. They plant jasmine everywhere and it smells amazing. The hotel is very clean and quiet. They have a delicious breakfast every morning in the breakfast room or outside in the garden. The gentlemen behind the desk were incredibly helpful arranging transportation, recommending restaurants, making reservations, and answering whatever questions we had. I would gladly stay at Hotel Santa Caterina again.

Classy in every way

  TripAdvisor
Old building with stylishly decorated, large rooms, very clean. Mine looked out onto the fabulous garden and was super quiet. The garden has a great view of the Tuscan hills. Classy service, loved the breakfast room. Personally, I enjoyed the 10 min. walk to the old city, especially passing through the stately Roman gate. Great value overall.

“Great location, lovely terrace and helpful staff”

  TripAdvisor
We stayed two nights at this attractive hotel and thoroughly enjoyed it. Particular thanks are due to a young man at the desk who went out of his way to help us with luggage, directions and returning a rented car. Beautiful view from the terrace and convenient location just outside the city walls. Easy walk into the beautiful city of Siena.

A perfect 40th Wedding

Perfect setting on 25/26th July 2004 for our Ruby Wedding date on our tour of Pisa, Siena, Florence and San Gimignano. Proprietor (Lorenze) perfect in organising those little extras. The garden setting for breakfast was intimate with beautiful views. A room at the rear of the hotel was very quiet with the panorama of the Tuscan countryside. Highly recommended. Somerset, UK

“Quaint friendly small hotel outside the city walls”

  TripAdvisor
This was our fourth trip to Italy, and the first time we were going to stay in Siena. On an earlier trip to Italy we did a day visit, and thought that Siena would be a good central location for daily tours of the Tuscan countryside and hill towns. Our travel agent recommended the Santa Caterina. The good news is that the hotel is quaint, and what you picture for a small hotel in Tuscany. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Lucio, one of the staff, was particularly good! We stayed in the "apartment". It is large enough for two couples. Two bedrooms, two baths, and two sitting rooms! Only one shower tho. Also, it could use an in room coffee machine since it is a few steps away from the main building and breakfast is not served until 8:00AM! But, if you stay at the Santa Caterina don't count on an easy walk to the train station. It is on the other side of town and requires a cab ride. Also, the walk to the Duomo and center of shopping is at least a mile. They said 1000 meters, but I timed it and it took 23 minutes to get there walking at a reasonable steady pace. We used taxi's for our tours and found the drivers very helpful and friendly. The price (50 euros an hour) to be fair and worth it.

Beautiful hotel, impeccable service

  TripAdvisor
Not only was this hotel beautiful but it was centrally located and offered some of the best service I have ever had. Staff were extremely nice and very helpful. A delicious breakfast was included in our stay which we got to enjoy in the lovely garden area. Would recommend this hotel if staying in Siena!

Charming and beautiful

  TripAdvisor
The place is beautiful, an old italian villa with perfect views and nice rooms. Really close to the city center, which is a perfect city to visit the whole Toscana. But the strength of the hotel is their owners and staff. I made a reservation without cancellation insurance and I broke my leg and they change the reservation without problem, even when the reservation was in Eastern.

Charming and quaint

  TripAdvisor
Loved our stay at Santa Caterina! Arrived in the dark of the evening and woke up to sunshine and spectacular views of the Tuscany countryside. Staff was very helpful and kind. Beautiful garden in the back. Parking on location for a small fee. We had our two small dogs with us and they stayed for free. Wish we could have stayed longer!

“Perfect place for a night or two in Siena”

  Tripadvisor.com
Santa Caterina grows on you the longer you are there. It's not a shiny perfect place but it has character and a bit of a "grandmother's house" feel to it. It's quirky in an appealing way and the room was clean and comfortable--furnished simply and small but not unmanageable. The view from our window, which we could open, was the lovely vista also seen from the backyard, and the noise was no big deal if we kept the street-facing window closed. It has parking which is very helpful, the staff was helpful and recommended a wonderful restaurant and the woman in the dining room was so kind and solicitous at breakfast. I'd recommend it and stay there again.
